Results of R’s recent bone marrow biopsy are in. We were told the chemo (Azacitidine) regimen he’s been on is to prepare/improve his marrow enough to get a boost of donor stem cells. Without the chemo, the donor cells would not “take” and kick out R’s cancerous ones.
We were also told that these first rounds of chemo would probably not do enough and more rounds would be needed before he could proceed to the next step.
Well, multiple tests just came back all pointing to full cancer remission!!! This is BEFORE ever getting the boost of donor cells. The chemo alone appears to have done the job, which we did not even know was a possibility.
R’s chances of remission were 30-40% due to the cancer relapse and he beat the odds.
We don’t know what comes next—if they’ll still want to give him more donor cells or more chemo. But for now, it’s the best news we could hope for.
I am so proud of him. He is our hero.
