Myelofibrosis–A Personal Journey

The Cost

Here’s some interesting and important information about MONEY. I spoke to a financial coordinator on the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center team. Without insurance, the bone marrow stem cell transplant would cost approximately:

allogeneic transplant (stem cells from a related donor such as a sibling): $444K – $765K, plus a $6.5K charge for each potential donor tested

unrelated transplant (from a donor bank): $780K – $1.3 Mil, plus an additional $44K charge for the donor search

people on the FaceBook group I belong to have paid upwards of $3 Mil

Thankfully, we have health insurance, so we’ll pay much less when the time comes.

R has his next appointment with a Myelofibrosis specialist (Dr. Anna Halpern) on August 22nd. We hold our breath a little between doctor appointments, not knowing what we’ll learn or what good (or scary) news they’ll bring. We remain hopeful, of course, but we can’t help but feel anxious and a little helpless being so reliant on others for a life-or-death matter.

In my quest to learn more, I joined a Myelofibrosis Facebook group, which is super informative and supportive.
